Day Five: Second Day of Screenings

Today we screened 44 people, and did it in about the same amount of time, despite only having two rooms rather than the 3 we had on the first day. My dad took the pictures and videos today, so I followed Sahra Sellers, a resident surgeon, and watched over her shoulder most of the time. We had a few special patients today whose pictures I will show below.

This patient has had surgery with IEP on their past two missions. He is wearing a brace on his deformed foot, which still needs a little bit of work. By the end of this mission, his foot should be looking much more normal, and it will be much easier for him to walk. He had such a great attitude when we were handing out in the exam room, and all of the returning doctors were excited to see him back.
He is a two year old cutie who unfortunately had polio or some other type of fever when he was only a few months old. He has no lower body strength; he cannot stand on his own and can barely sit up by himself. Because of the lack of muscle, the surgeons here can't do much, other than suggest a wheel chair and rehabilitation exercises. Hopefully Stacy and Amy will see him at the Children's Hospital for a follow up.
My dad really connected with this girl, who is 13 years old. She unfortunately dropped out of school because she was picked on for having a slight club foot. The surgeons and my dad made a deal with her that they would only do the surgery if she would return to school and finish her education. She reluctantly agreed, knowing that having her foot fixed would make tolerating school a little bit easier.
After the screenings, we took a walk, relaxed a little, and had a nice dinner out at Victoria, another hotel in Can Tho. Tomorrow brings the first day of surgery, which I am very excited about!
